The Institute On Governance (IOG) is a Canadian non-profit think tank founded in 1990. We provide an independent source of knowledge and advice on governance issues, and seek to help organizations and societies realize their objectives through sound governance. Both in Canada and internationally, we explore, share and promote good governance principles, standards and practices.
Our Services
An independent, neutral organization, the IOG receives no core funding. We work with a wide range of clients and partners, including governments, communities, business and public organizations, to assess their governance and to develop programs for improvement. While much of our activity takes place in our home base in Canada, we also work extensively with international partners and governments. Our services include:
- Monitoring and evaluation of programs and organizational structures
- Comparative research and literature reviews
- Advisory services on strengthening governance practices
- Accountability and performance reporting
- Policy research and advice
- Strategic planning
- Knowledge management
- Design and implementation of international development programs
- Public administration courses
- Leadership training
- Design and facilitation of multi-stakeholder meetings
- Convening of forums

Our Principled Approach
The IOG’s work derives from principles and conventions shaped through the United Nations. We do not promote a specific “model”. Rather, we explore the implications of these principles through research, and help others to determine what “good governance” means to them in their context. Governance practices should be sensitive to differences in mission, culture and traditions. IOG’s fundamental principles of good governance are the following:
- Legitimacy and Voice
- Direction
- Performance
- Accountability
- Fairness
Our Expertise
IOG staff come from a variety of backgrounds and disciplines. Many have previously held senior positions in the government, academic institutions, and the non-profit and private sectors. We work with associates who contribute their expertise and skills to specific Institute programs and projects. Our work puts us in contact with senior officials from all levels of government, as well as the voluntary and private sectors. This constant interaction affords us complementary perspectives - inside and outside views - of the challenges facing today’s leaders.
Employment Opportunities
There are no employment opportunities at the IOG at the present time.
